wow... my poor little livejournal. how could have i forgotten thee? well, if it is any solace to any of you who might still be reading this after nine months of neglect, i have been keeping a not-nearly-as-indie-rock/emo/cool web log over at xanga... i know, how could i? anyway, for posterity, and a record of my thoroughly uninteresting life since last winter... clicky. i have been working quite a time consuming/stressful job since i last posted, and the frequent posting that the lifestle of the collegiate semester slacker afforded my could not go on as it had before. anyway, i plan to reestablish a web presence along with a gargantuan professional looking website by the beginning of next year. i guess this live journal will have to do for now... maybe i'll double post some of my musings on white bread xanga and on hardcore livejournal... oh well, take care, and i promise to post once again.

just so everybody knows... my brother was being the typical asshole that he is and posted the previous fake entry... he is unemployed and very bored, and just discovered how to use a computer, fucking loser... but no need to worry laydees... the f-train is on the right track, if you know what i mean... (looks around nervously). but anyway, if you know my writing style, you know that that's not me. from now on that'll learn me to keep everything on my computer password protected. my life is very budy, so sorry about the lack of posts, more to come soon.

favorite albums of 2004... [05 Jan 2005|01:43pm]
as we all learned from 'high fidelity'... everything great about pop culture can be distilled into bite site top-five lists... over the past few weeks, i have mulled and hemmed and hawed over what i liked in 2004... and decided this wasnt good enough... so i thought i'd also come up with a list of what i'm looking forward to in 2005... original huh? So here, my friends are my favorite albums and of 2004, and the albums and i am looking forward to most in 2005.

Wilco, 'A Ghost is Born' I was expecting a lot from Jeff Tweedy and the boys via Chicago when I heard a follow up to the monumental and near-flawless 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot'... maybe too much. 'YHF' succeeded in a virtuosic orchestration of distortion and sound with brilliant alt.country songs... 'Ghost' was fit to be not so intricate, and to be a little bit sloppy and unkempt, with mumbled and slurred vocals, jam band instrumentals and errant guitar solos... artistic moves that at first turned me off to the record, but after a few listens, I understood that Wilco was not looking to make YHF2, but to simply put out raw, simple songs, and they certainly succeed on that level. 'company in my back' 'im a wheel' and 'theologians' are stand outs in this record.

Earlimart, 'Treble and Tremble': At the passing of Elliott Smith last year, after bemoaning the fact that another bright light in the world of music had snuffed himself out, I wondered what the artistic reaction to would be... Ben Folds 'Too Late' available only on bootlegs now is a poignant ode to smith's soothing songs, and the tragic irony that this seemingly gentle man could not find his own peace of mind. The sometimes elancholy songs on Earlimart's 'Treble and Tremble' are among the first major artistic reactions to smith's death and are racked with the pain of a lost hero, and the efforts to come to term with his death and the glowing reminiscence of his life. Songs titled like Heaven Adores You and It's Okay to Think About Ending express the collective sadness any fan off Elliott Smith must have felt after the news of his passing. That and with the aid of senior 'ship collective' group and mentors Grandaddy makes treble and tremble a satisfying requiem.

Interpol, 'Antics': This album much like Wilco's 'A Ghost is Born', was handicapped from the outset by my unrealistic expectations from a predecessor. 'Turn on the Bright Lights' was sheer brilliance, and naturally, 'Antics' could never stand up to its breadth or depth. But once again, the dapper dudes from gotham give indie music fans a refreshing mix of dark, yet danceable pop songs. With one brilliant and one great release, Interpol is quickly solidifying its position as the best band from new york.

Modest Mouse 'Good News For People Who Love Bad News': As the genre of Independent Rock sets a foothold in the mainstream, modest mouse's good news and standout single 'float on' emerged as a stalwart on ipods, car commercials and modern adult alternative radio stations. As an older fan of indie rock (24 mind you), this phenomenon is quite amusing, since a mere four years ago, mentioning the obscure yet credible modest mouse would have gained you mad scene points on makeoutclub... good news however may yet be their best album to date, with musically intuitive songs and intricate moments that beg to be played over and over. I still haven't gotten sick of float on... lucky me.

The Arcade Fire 'Funeral': Few albums receive universal acclaim, fewer truly deserve that acclaim, fewer still surpass it Funeral by Montreal rock band The Arcade Fire does just that. Reining in a particular melancholy that seems to pervade life in the mid oughts, the arcade fire gives us a tour of neighborhoods in this astoundingly dense and lush LP. upon first listening a week ago, I felt a great regret that I had not bought this album as soon as it came out in September.

Albums I am waiting with baited breath for in 2005:
Beck... Mr. Hansen says its going to be Sea Change 2... hrmmm...
Coldplay... out of spite... the track theyre on... kid a is the next radiohead lp they'll have to copy... good luck with that chris.
Grandaddy... could THIS be the breakout album? probably not... but I'll enjoy the literate warblings and keyboard loops from my favorite american band all the same. shh... it'll be our little secret.
British Sea Power... 'the decline and fall' was my favorite recording of 2003, and i simply cannot wait for their follow up.
Oasis... hahahahahahaah... just out of morbid curiosity... but seriously, they used to be my favorite band in my high school days... now they are just a parody of themselves
Weezer... another favorite band of my hs days, but i wish weezer all the best, and am seriously rooting for them to match the brilliance of the blue album and .
Super Furry Animals... a consistently great group that always astounds me.
The Flaming Lips... coming out with the much anticipated follow up to 'yoshimi'

yippee! i just realized all these new releases from bands equal tours to support them! woo hoo! movies come tomorrow, goodnight!

wow... weird day, but it was not diasagreeable, just weird.

so after waking up to a good ten inches of snow, and having to shovel the cars out of my driveway, i had to take a mandatory drug test for employment at my new job... not that i have anything to hide, but having to pee on command for a lady in a white jacket is a strange thing that one does not have to do everyday... so it was just weird.

after that i spent the day cleaning my messy house and dissecting the inner workings of the return of the king extended edition dvd... now im here, sitting at my computer. blah.

wow... today was nicer than expected. I went to my grandparents' house for a big cookie making, casserole eating, tree decorating christmas party. i havent seen them all in a non formal setting in a while and it was ok... not nearly as fun as the events with my dad's family, but it was still a nice thing to do. my neice is getting cuter, bigger and smarter every day... sorry my entry's so brief, but i have a pretty big day tomorrow... a huge job interview, and im a little nervous... and i miss megs! i hope her trip back home from school went safely, and that she's back in indiana safe and sound.

Ahh I'm worn out... today was one of those so cold your bones hurt kind of days... having two gift laden plastic bags hanging from one hand didnt help matters either... so i had to alternate warming my hands in my pockets while i waited for the bus... not good... but i did have fun, and im happy to say im out of the holiday fray and all that's left is the giving... which is a nice place to be... kind of like being done with finals...

ok, here's a gripe i have, and i need to vent. in boston, like in most major cities, we have homeless people, nothing wrong with that... that is, it's a fact of life and i'm not normally bothered by them. the sad fact is that but for the grace of god, any of us could end up in the unfortunate circumstances these people are in. when im in town, whenever i see one of these guys i usually search around in my pocket for whatever change i have. so that happened today... guy asks for change... i give all of it to him... he says merry christmas... i say god bless... i walk on my way. two blocks later, another guy asks me for change, i say i dont have anything, carrying those two bulging bags, looking like a jerk... the guy mutters behing my back 'read the bible, and then do what it says'... i look back at him with a patented raging glare that i only save for when im truly annoyed or frustrated. he must get lots of people that have change jingling in their pockets who simply decide not to give any to him, and he must have thought i was the same... i dont know... one of the thing that pisses me off most is being misunderstood... im not yuppie scum that ignores the homeless... bah, but then i remembered the nice reaction i got from the other guy, and i felt better. just something i had to get off my chest.

ever have one of those days where you thought it would be boring, bland and non descript, and then it turns out to be extraordinary? well, today turned out to be one of those days for me! let me explain, in my ongoing search for full time employment, my dad thought it would be worth a shot to get in touch with some people he knows in the media industry... hey, it's called netwoking. so he wrote various people in hope of getting some leads, so lo and behold, a call came from jack williams, the dean of news anchors in the boston market! my dad knows jack from the couple of times mr. williams has visited my father's class to profile a student for a weekly special needs adoption segment called "wednesday's child". over the years, jack williams has been so kind to my dad and has always found time to answer back including getting him in touch with the station's meteorologist when my dad was researching a tremendous storm that had swamped my grandfather's boat and left him stranded in the north atlantic in 1945 (but that's another story). jack was good enough call back and said he'd help me with any leads, which automatically brightened my day.

aside from that, i decided to sign up for a career workshop at fu in the bronx next week, so that means im going back to nyc, which is always an exciting event... it's a one day day trip so aside from pursuing professional leads et al. i probably wont do much else, but i can promise you i'll be sure to visit either 'a salt and battery' (my favorite chip shop in the heart of the village) or gray's papaya (legendary hot dog/tropical juice stand also in the village) to rekindle some good old new york city nostalgia.

well... now im chatting with my gal megs, so i have no more time for you... don't be take it personal, but... ya know.

"War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

yesterday i went trout fishing... and last night i wrote this amazing entry singing the praises of fishing on fly water and the philosophy of angling akin to 'the compleat angler' in scope and depth. unfortunately, my computer crashed and the entry passed to the aether from whence it came... it's a shame too, for that little trip to the deerfield cleared things up in my life a little, i dont care what the feminist intelligentsia says, ernest hemingway was the fucking man, and he lived life they way he fished, big and deliberately... i intend to live the way i try to fish for trout, patiently and serenely. after frustraton yesterday, the fish taught me a lesson about patience... then i ate them...
